It was never meant to be a diagnosis, and understanding exactly what it does and doesn't measure will keep you from reading too much into a figure that sits between 25 and 25.4.
Body Mass Index is weight divided by height squared. In metric units that's kilograms divided by meters squared; in imperial units you multiply pounds divided by inches squared by 703 to convert the result to the same scale. The Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet devised the ratio in the 1830s while studying population averages, which is why it was originally called the Quetelet Index. Squaring the height is the clever part: taller people are heavier simply because they're bigger, and dividing by height squared strips most of that scaling effect out so a person who is 5'2" and a person who is 6'4" can be placed on the same axis.
Take someone 6 feet (72 inches) tall weighing 210 pounds. Multiply 210 by 703 to get 147,630. Square 72 to get 5,184. Divide 147,630 by 5,184 and you land on a BMI of 28.5, which the CDC's adult BMI guidance classifies as overweight. Now suppose that same person drops to 183 pounds: the math becomes 183 times 703 divided by 5,184, or 24.8 — back under the 25 threshold and inside the normal range. Watching how a 27-pound change flips the category is a useful reminder that these cut-offs are lines on a continuum, not walls.
Pick your unit system, type in your height and weight as accurately as you can, and read the category the tool returns. Weigh yourself in the morning before breakfast for consistency, since a large meal or a day of heavy hydration can swing the scale by two or three pounds and nudge your BMI by a tenth or two. BMI is a screening tool, not a body-composition scanner. Because the formula only knows your total weight, it can't tell muscle from fat. A rugby prop or a competitive sprinter can post a BMI of 29 while carrying single-digit body fat, and a sedentary office worker can land at 23 while carrying more fat than is healthy — a pattern researchers sometimes call "normal weight obesity." BMI also reads differently across populations: at the same index, people of South Asian descent tend to carry more visceral fat, which is why some health systems use lower action thresholds for those groups. It says nothing about where fat sits, and abdominal fat carries more cardiometabolic risk than fat on the hips, which is why waist circumference is often measured alongside it.

Given all these caveats, you might wonder why doctors keep using BMI at all. The honest answer is convenience paired with decades of correlation data. Because it needs only height and weight — two things you can measure in ten seconds with no equipment — it scales to entire populations in a way that DEXA scans and hydrostatic tanks never could. Insurers, epidemiologists, and clinics use it as a first-pass filter that flags who might benefit from a closer look. When a study of a million people links a rising average BMI to more diabetes and heart disease, that signal is real even though the tool can't tell you which individual is at risk. Think of your reading the way a nurse thinks of a first blood-pressure cuff: a quick check that decides whether a deeper conversation is worth having, not the final word.
The most useful thing you can do with your BMI is refuse to let it stand alone. Measure your waist and compare it against your hips, track your resting heart rate, and note how your clothes fit over a season — those everyday signals fill in what a single ratio leaves out. If your index sits at 27 but your waist is trim and you can climb three flights of stairs without gasping, the number is describing your muscle, not your risk. If it reads a comfortable 22 but your waist keeps creeping outward, that's the more important story.
